Hardware
Small NAS only HomeServer (without the option of ESXi virtualization or Multi-OS all-in-one, avoid when possible)
Minimum
Mainboard with 2GB RAM minimum, for SoHo prefer 4-8 GB, for many users 16GB+, for a mailserver 64GB+
Bootdrive min 50GB (prefer datacenter SSDs)

My suggestion: use server-class-hardware (prefer SuperMicro)
- Mainboard with vt-d support
CPU with vt-d support (I still prefer Intel for server use)
- Min 4 GB ecc-ram - board should support > = 32GB (you should prefer ECC memory in any server)
- known to work with Solaris and ESXi
- prefer Intel nics
In general
Solarish works with most mainboards. Most problems are due nics and disk controller,
check hardware compatibility list:
